Support SMC this #GivingTuesday!

This has been the most challenging year for the Somerville Media Center in our 37-year history. But our strong response to the coronavirus pandemic has shown that the broad array of hyperlocal media that our members and staff produce year round has never been more necessary than it is in times of crisis.

Please donate whatever you are able to in this difficult time to Somerville Media Center today!

SMC’s mission is to provide that vital news, public affairs, and entertainment content in the interest of democracy. We give access to electronic media-making through low-cost media education workshops, equipment and facility access, and collaborative distribution on Somerville Community Access Television, Boston Free Radio and SMC’s web and social media presences. Our SMC Youth Media is an incubator and training ground for media makers of the future and plays an important role for developing engaged media-savvy citizens.

A donation to SMC on Giving Tuesday also directly supports SMC’s vibrant youth media programs. These include our drop-in Makerspace Mondays workshops, 6-week intensive Workshop Wednesdays, summer camps and other incubators for the next generation of video, radio and podcast producers.

As challenging as this year has been, there are more challenges to come. The federal assault on community media continues even as we anticipate yearly declines in the cable franchise fees that are a significant funding source for us. The City of Somerville has also asked us to move from our longtime home at 90 Union Square next year, which will be a costly undertaking.

If you are considering joining or renewing your membership, now is the time to do so. Help us make SMC more effective and more relevant to Somervillians daily lives than it has ever been before. We need you back!

All donations are tax-deductible. Thank you again for your support!

Best,
Brian Zipp,
SMC Executive Director
