Somerville Media Center is offering two workshops with experienced grant writer and educator Ellen Gugel.
The workshops are geared to non-profit professionals, artists and community members who are interested in learning how to research applicable grants and create successful proposals.
The classes will be held at the The Parenting Journey, 366 Somerville Avenue, Somerville on Friday, October 6th and Friday, October 13 from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
The first workshop will cover grant-seeking, and the second grant writing. Each workshop is $75 and $125 for both. More information about the class, instructor and registration is found below. The Instructor

Ellen Gugel, Grant Professional Certification (GPC), has 15 years nonprofit management and fundraising experience. She has helped many organizations from small, emerging grassroots to large multi-million dollar agencies: human and social services agencies; health care institutions; advocacy, environmental, conservation, and animal welfare groups; and arts and cultural institutions. She has won hundreds of grant awards for her clients over the past ten years. As Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations at Lutheran Social Services (2010-2014), she established a successful grants program. Previously she consulted and served as Development Manager at Tower Hill (2004-2007), a regional botanic garden where she oversaw fundraising including annual appeal, major gifts, membership, and foundation and corporate support and secured $4 million in grants for a $12 million expansion. As the Executive Director of Orenda Wildlife Land Trust (1998-2004), Ellen reinvigorated a fledgling grassroots non-profit dedicated to preserving habitat for wildlife where she established successful grants and membership programs and initiated the organization’s first capital campaign. Workshop 1

An Introduction to Grant Seeking Friday, October 6th, 11:00am- 2:00pm
Grant writing skills are in demand and valuable to anyone working in non-profits, community programs, government agencies, academic research, arts and environmental groups and even businesses seeking grants or government contracts. This ability is also a valuable skill for job seekers or volunteers serving in community based organizations. This workshop provides an introduction to the grant seeking process including an overview of the essential administrative functions for grant acquisition, types of funding sources, prospect research, cultivation of funders, breakdown of budgets, the anatomy of a grant, examining examples, and preparing a proposal concept.

Workshop 2

Beyond “Grant Writing 101” Friday, October 13th, 11:00am- 2:00pm
This “deep dive” advanced grant writing workshop builds on your basic grant writing skills and knowledge. Developing a solid, fundable grant proposal goes beyond good writing and organizing, and this workshop will cover advanced topics including budgets, logic models, cover letters, leveraging resources and partnerships, and others. We’ll ask the tough questions that help us create proposals that get funded, stay funded, and are aligned with our organization’s mission and priorities. Participants will learn the strategic plan of grant writing, by writing exercises that help them write an executive summary and other sections. This workshop will be a combination lecture, interactive exercises, writing exercises, and discussion. Participants will leave the class understanding how to research, write and develop their specific project.
