SMC News Update – Week of April 13

The mission of Somerville Media Center to provide timely news and information to the community is more important now than ever. This week’s update from City Council featured Councilors Matt McLaughlin and Ben Ewen-Campen on the effectiveness of the Somerville response to the COVID-19 pandemic, what the Council and Mayor’s Office are working toward and best practices for when you need to leave your house.
 
 
 
In this week’s State Delegation Update, Senator Pat Jehlen spoke about the staggering unemployment numbers in Massachusetts and how the state is working to streamline the frustrating application system. Representative Mike Connolly spoke optimistically about the Eviction and Foreclosure Moratorium Bill.
 
 
In an update from the Business and Nonprofit fronts, SMC spoke with East Somerville Main Streets, Union Square Main Streets as well as from Machu Chicken and Mudflat Pottery Studios about how they are navigating their operations as certain business incomes have slowed down or stopped.
 
 
SMC Youth Media Coordinator Heather McCormack spoke with Dr. Lisa P. Kuh, Director of Early Education at Somerville Public Schools about how families can better adapt to new world of remote learning, play, and socialization and what resources are available to them.
